Resurfacing work on the newly extended Load Street car park in Bewdley will take place next week marking the end of a major regeneration scheme of the town centre.

The car park will close on Sunday evening and work will start on Monday 9 April. There will be no pedestrian access through the car park while resurfacing takes place although people will be able to access St George’s Hall and cafe on foot via Dog Lane.

The car park’s public toilets will be closed on Monday and there will be restricted access to the blocks via Load Street from Tuesday afternoon onwards. Motorists are asked to use the town’s other car parks at Gardners Meadow and Dog Lane while Load Street is out of action.

It is hoped work to the car park’s upper level will be completed by Friday 13 April with the lower level following a week later on Friday 20 April.

The work is the final piece of the jigsaw of a major regeneration scheme which has involved relocating the town’s library and medical centre to Dog Lane. The former buildings have been demolished to make way for Load Street car park to be extended. The plan includes developing a new landscaped area with seating.

Director for Community Wellbeing and Environment Linda Draycott said: “We’d like to thank residents and visitors for their patience during the construction of the new car park. Our contractor will complete the resurfacing as soon as possible so the car park can open, offering even more spaces in the town centre.

“This is a popular well-used car park which is ideal for visiting shops and businesses in the town centre and spending time by the river. We have worked closely with local traders to ensure they are fully aware of this final stage of the scheme.”
