Improvements to Worcester Street Kidderminster progressing well

Following the public information exercise in the autumn, improvement works to increase footfall in Kidderminster and boost economic development in the town are progressing well.

The scheme, which is jointly funded by Worcestershire County Council and Wyre Forest District Council with further funding being sought from GBSLEP, includes opening the currently pedestrianised route up to vehicles.                                                                                                                    

Councillor Ken Pollock, Worcestershire County Council's Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Economy and Infrastructure, said: "The works being carried in Worcester Street should encourage regeneration in the town and support economic growth by delivering better access into, and through, Kidderminster town centre for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. The works are also set improve the look of the area when complete."

The team onsite have been busy since starting back in October and the works are on track.

The section of pavement by the Boars Head has seen new kerbs and tarmac, laid along with the installation of upgraded street lighting that will house brighter, LED lights.

Alongside these footway improvements work has also started on a new drain system to improve water drainage from the newly surfaced road when complete.

Early in the New Year, works to improve the road and footpaths from Marlborough Street up to High Street will begin.

When complete, the works are set to have improved the paving, introduced a cycle lane, replaced existing steps and planting areas along Worcester Road/Coventry Street, installed new seats and bus shelters and the provided modern lighting.

Councillor Chris Rogers, Wyre Forest District Council Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration and Planning, said: “This is the second phase of the improvements to Kidderminster town centre following the £2 million invested in partnership with the County Council to improve Vicar Street, High Street and Exchange Street.

"The District Council is committed to improving the town centre through works such as these and through the regeneration of the Lion Fields sites as part of the transformation of the town centre offer to support businesses and increase footfall.”

Worcestershire County Council is committed to ensuring the County is Open for Business. Improvements will also be made to cycling routes in the area to connect the town centre with the railway station and to provide the access required to regenerate the area.
