Residents are urged to unite against dementia

Residents can get involved in Dementia Action Week from Monday 21 to Sunday 27 May by attending pop-up events in the district.

The national campaign, Dementia Action Week, has been organised by the Alzheimer’s Society as a way to encourage everyone to take action, big or small, to improve the lives of those affected by the condition.

The first free event in Wyre Forest will take place on Tuesday 22 May from 10am-2pm at St Michael’s Church, Stourport. A range of organisations will be on hand to provide information and advice about dementia including Age UK, Worcestershire Association of Carers, the Alzheimer’s Society and many more. Local business owners are also welcome to attend and will have a chance to learn about how they can make their shops “dementia friendly”. Free refreshments will be provided.

A similar event will take place outside Kidderminster Town Hall on Thursday 24 May from 10am-2pm. West Mercia Police, Hereford and Worcestershire Fire Service and Telecare will be in attendance too. Residents also have an opportunity to find out about becoming a “dementia friend”.

Councillor Chris Rogers, Cabinet Member for Housing, Health and Wellbeing, said: “The council proudly supports the Alzheimer’s Society and all the great work they do. I urge anyone who is affected by dementia, knows someone with the condition or who just wants to understand it more, to come along to one of the free events taking place in the district.”
